FROM MY GRANDMOTHER TO ME 14
Wheel's pattern of History
This Obi was a auction to get on the internet,
it is not fashionable desigu, being more than 600 years old.
The material is a milky green satin that can be worn during the Spring and eary Summer.
It makes its wearer feel light and fresh.
The woven design on this Obi seems a quite combination of natural and man made elements.
It is a Bhuddist design that describes the flow and integration of all elements in the world;
clouds, waves, catwheels and turtles all move together across the Obi.
The wheels are decorated with a hexagonal turtle pattern and the sporhes of the wheels are sunrise pattern,
reminiscent of the old Japanese flag.
The wheels symbolise the role of man and oxen in this pattern of life
and the distortion of the wheels suggest sea serpents, with hexagonal scals.
I have worn this Obi several times in the past years(2001~2005)
and people have said that it remind then of Spring in Japan.
